Gloves for mountain biking? Here, you can find out why it's essential always to wear gloves when mountain biking.

Never ride without gloves again!

There are certainly some things you don't absolutely need when biking, but gloves are definitely not one of them. We explain why you should wear gloves when mountain biking and why Ergon gloves should be your first choice.

Protection against injuries

It doesn't always have to be a serious fall that ruins your day of biking or even your entire tour. Sometimes it's enough to just fall off your MTB on a gravel road, for example, while chatting with your biking buddies. Like any normal person, you break your fall with your hands – and bang, you've got a good load of gravel in your hands. And all because you weren't wearing gloves. With MTB gloves, this would be nothing more than a funny anecdote, but for you, the biking fun is over. At this point, it should be noted that, for this reason, long-finger gloves are always recommended for MTB riding. This is the only way to protect your hands when riding close to branches, thorns, or bushes.

Perfect fit – better performance

However, bike gloves are more than just reliable protection against injuries. They also offer a significant boost in comfort and control. Ergon gloves fit like a glove, helping you grip, brake, and shift with precision at all times, regardless of the terrain's demands. Like all ergonomic products from Ergon, they are specially designed for their intended use.

Ergon HM2 MTB Gloves

The HM2 is a lightweight all-around glove that takes the ergonomics of gripping to a new level. The palm and fingers are anatomically pre-shaped and always find the perfect position on the handlebars, ensuring optimal control on the trail. Its upper hand is made of elastic, breathable mesh fabric that offers excellent ventilation, so your hands always stay dry, even on hot days. Non-slip surfaces, such as silicone inserts on the tips of the thumb and index finger, enable safe shifting and braking, offering a perfect grip. The consistent absence of padding ensures optimal sensitivity and control. The Velcro fastener at the wrist can be individually adjusted to ensure a perfect fit.

Ergon HE2 Evo Enduro Gloves

The HE2 Evo is the enduro and gravity glove in our range. It is also anatomically pre-shaped, fits like a second skin, and sits almost wrinkle-free thanks to its intelligent cut. This also supports the ergonomically optimal position of the fingers and palm on the mountain bike cockpit. The back of the hand and fingers are exceptionally flexible and well ventilated thanks to the use of mesh fabric.

Additionally, it features padded reinforcement on the knuckles for protection against external impact and enhanced durability. The terry cloth area in the crook of the thumb is used to wipe away sweat. The silicone prints on the thumb and index finger stick to the shift and brake levers, so you always have control of your bike, even on the most intense downhill rides.

The silicone surfaces on the index fingers of the HM2 and HE2 Evo are also touchscreen compatible, allowing you to use your cell phone without having to remove your gloves every time you want to make a call. Ergon gloves are also perfectly matched to our MTB grips, but of course, they also work great with grips from other manufacturers. We offer our MTB gloves in sizes XS to XXL, ensuring every mountain biker can find the perfect pair.

More grip in wet conditions

During intense exertion, your hands sweat and become damp. Ergon gloves are therefore extremely breathable, which means they wick moisture away from the skin to the outside, ensuring a good hand climate, which in turn provides a secure grip on the handlebars. However, since it is often not possible to wick away all the moisture, the rest is absorbed by special sweat-absorbing materials. This is particularly important on the palms of the hands, as moisture is known to be the biggest enemy of grip. Gloves are also an advantage when it rains, because even when wet, good bike gloves offer sufficient grip thanks to their non-slip materials.

Gloves for durability

If you ride without gloves, your hands will also sweat, and most riders will lose their grip on the handlebars. Exception: Cyclists use grips that offer good grip even when wet – these include Ergron MTB grips, which guarantee a secure grip on the handlebars at all times thanks to their special rubber compound. What many cyclists may not know is that hand sweat and external weather conditions significantly reduce the durability of the grips. So if you mainly ride without gloves, your grips may become sticky over time or wear out more quickly.

Comfort on long journeys

Many gloves have padded palms that absorb vibrations and shocks, protecting your joints and hands. Gloves also often improve ergonomics, as a good fit reduces pressure on sensitive nerves under the palms of the hands, preventing numbness. This is particularly important if you are not riding with ergonomic grips. Gloves also offer protection from the elements. On cool days, gloves keep your hands warm, and on sunny days, they protect your skin from sunburn. They also prevent your hands from coming into direct contact with dirt, mud, or oil.

Conclusion

Gloves are more than just a fashion accessory—they increase your safety, improve riding comfort, absorb shocks, and protect your hands from strain and injury. Whether you're going on a short tour or tackling technical descents, gloves should always be an integral part of your equipment.
