Beyond Limits

It is a sensation: Ergon athlete Laura Philipp won the world championship title at the Ironman in Nice. With tears of joy in her eyes, she crossed the finish line on the famous Promenade des Anglais after 8:45:15 hours.

“This is the best feeling in the world,” said Laura Philipp into the microphones of the many journalists after she had raised the finish banner, along with a German flag, into the air. Previously, the 37-year-old from Neckargemünd, who rides the Ergon SR Tri saddle, had delivered an almost perfect race, securing the greatest success of her career so far.

8:45:15 Hours Target Time

Work hard. Have fun. Kick Ass.

Laura Philipp came to triathlon late. This is why she wants to make the most of the time she has left as a professional athlete. Everything she does, she does with extreme discipline. This is her approach to the sport; without discipline, it wouldn’t work, she explains. Despite all the hard work, Philipp enjoys what she does. “I have a lot of fun because I love what I do,” she says. Moreover, she loves to challenge herself further. Only this way the “Kick Ass” performances ultimately emerge. These words are also her motto, her motivation, her superpower, according to Philipps herself.

The Beginnings

Laura Philipp’s entry into triathlon was not necessarily foreseeable in her youth. Her passion was climbing, where she managed to conquer passages with a difficulty level of 9+ (!). During her high school years, however, she became increasingly annoyed by the long waiting and travel times with public transport on the way to school. She decided to cycle to school from then on. In fact, she was soon not only faster than her classmates who used public transport, but she also reported that she could concentrate better in class.

Cycling 60 kilometers a day became part of her daily routine for years. Her entry into running was similarly coincidental. Because the roughly five-kilometer walks with the family dog became too boring for her, she began to jog these daily routines. She quickly developed a liking for longer runs. She then taught herself to swim using YouTube videos, and all it took was participation in the local “Heidelberg Man,” a triathlon over the Olympic distance, to realize that she had a talent for the sport. The rest is history: a continuous rise in the triathlon world, peppered with many victories.

Mental Strength

Ambitious, passionate, inquisitive – this is how Laura Philipp describes herself. She likes to challenge herself, be open to new things, and push her limits. This also helps her in her daily work with her coach and partner Philipp Seipp. She is always open to his suggestions for improvement, even if with the often not so pleasant criticism. Perhaps, says Philipp, this is her real talent: The way and openness with which she approaches things. The fact that she completes 99 percent of her training alone does not bother her. She experiences solitude as something very beautiful because it allows her to fully concentrate on the training goals, always living in the moment. Thus, Laura Philipp manages – at least in the quieter units – to sort her thoughts and find her inner balance during training. This, in turn, leads to mental strength. How strong she has become was already evident in October 2022 during the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. She was given a five-minute time penalty after about 45 kilometers on the bike course, something that baffled her deeply. This threw her from the top ten back to 40th place. Although this punishment initially frustrated her immensely, she managed to fight her way back to fourth place.

At the finish, she was still so unhappy that she considered quitting the sport. It was only when she watched the race recording, in which the reporters repeatedly said how strong her comeback was, that she realized what a grandiose performance she had delivered.

It’s all about the right balance. The cake as a reward is good for my soul – it makes me better.

Body and Soul in Harmony

Laura Philipp lives by the 80/20 rule. Of course, she eats 80 percent healthy. With all the hard training work, there must also be things to satisfy the soul. This is why a piece of cake is a fixed part of her training routine. Overall, balance is very important to her. Only in this way, can top performances be achieved, only in this way can she reach her limit and sometimes even go beyond it. Regarding balance and physical health, she also points out that she and Philipp Seipp closely observe and incorporate the female cycle into training planning when it comes to training volumes and intensities. In the first half of the cycle, she says, she often thinks she has really good legs in training and can set best times, while in the second half she has to struggle more with herself. This training work, which takes the female cycle into account, seems to unlock the potential for enormous successes. After her triumph in Nice, she was quoted by the press as saying, “I am in the first half of my cycle. I always hoped that the World Championship would fall into this phase.”
