The development of an ergonomic bicycle saddle is a complex process. Scientific research, extensive testing, and close collaboration among our interdisciplinary team of medical professionals, ergonomists, designers, and engineers form the cornerstones of ergonomic saddle development at Ergon.

How does Ergon develop an ergonomic bicycle saddle?

Ergonomics stands at the beginning of the development process: a deep anatomical, biomechanical, and medical knowledge forms the foundation. Gender, sit bone width, bike type, area of use, and riding position are the key factors that must be considered to distribute weight on the saddle and maximize sitting comfort optimally. Once the ergonomic saddle concept is developed, the design and engineering team refine the idea, select the right materials, and, if necessary, further develop the manufacturing process to make the new saddle idea producible. Step by step, the research and development team approaches the new ergonomic bike saddle from various angles. With each in-house produced prototype, multiple tests are conducted on the computer, in the lab, and in the field with many test riders. The results flow back into a new prototype, and the testing begins anew until the saddle is finally ready. At Ergon, a lot of effort, time, and passion go into developing a new ergonomic bicycle saddle.

Why is ergonomics important in bicycle saddles?

Ergonomics in bicycle saddles is essential to ride comfortably without pain, pressure points, or numbness. "With an ergonomic bicycle saddle from Ergon, the saddle shape, width, and padding are adjusted to optimize the pressure distribution while cycling. When the weight is well distributed on the sit bones, the pressure on the sensitive perineal and genital areas is reduced, thus improving comfort while sitting on the bicycle saddle," explains Simon Schumacher, head of the ergonomics department at Ergon. The saddle must fit your anatomy, riding position, and bike type to achieve this. And since no single saddle model can work for everyone on every bike, Ergon saddles come in various designs and models.

What makes a comfortable saddle?

A comfortable saddle is rarely the wide, soft, and thickly padded saddle you might envision when you think of "comfortable." "A saddle is comfortable (and ergonomic) long term when the sit bones are the contact points with the saddle. In combination with a cut-out or channel, the sensitive structures in the middle of the bike saddle, such as the pubic arch, perineal area, and genital area, are additionally relieved," says Dr. Kim Tofaute, saddle expert at Ergon. Depending on your sit bone width, gender, and riding position, the contact points with the saddle change, and thus the saddle size and design. For this reason, our saddles are always available in two sizes. You can find the correct saddle width with a sit bone measurement or by calculating your body measurements using our online Saddle Selector. Our range includes saddles for women and men, saddles for road bikes, mountain bikes, touring and trekking, city bikes, and even triathlon. With the right bike saddle, you increase comfort while cycling, and numbness and pain are effectively avoided.

What makes Ergon bicycle saddles unique?

Ergon saddles are unique because they:

  • Offer the right saddle concept based on sit bone width and gender-specific pelvic anatomy: Your weight rests on the sit bones, and the sensitive structures in the perineal and genital areas are relieved.
  • We will provide the right saddle shape for you based on your riding position and bike type. This will ensure that Pressure is optimally distributed, and pedaling movement is not restricted.
  • Follow well-thought-out concepts considering bicycle ergonomics, not just the bike saddle in isolation. If the saddle forces you into a comfortable position for the seat area but an unnatural position for the rest of the body, you simply shift the discomfort. Your hands or wrists, back, shoulders, or neck might ache on the next ride.

Our tip: The Ergon Fitting Box guides you through a DIY bike fitting, where you determine and adjust the most important factors, such as saddle height, saddle tilt, saddle offset, and saddle-handlebar distance, individually for you. The saddle becomes even more comfortable with the proper adjustment of your bike.

    Enjoy your (ergonomic) cycling!
