We are Lukas Baum and Georg Egger from Speed Company Racing. The Cape Epic is more than just a race for us – it’s a passion. After our victory and second place in previous years, we are eager to compete again in 2025. Here, you’ll get an insight into our preparations for this legendary mountain bike stage race.

Preparation for the Cape Epic doesn’t start shortly before the race. It’s a year-round process. Right after the season analysis, we begin planning for the upcoming year. We place great importance on a balanced mix of basic endurance, intense interval sessions, and specific strength training. 

An important part is also participating in selected races to test our form and develop race toughness. We analyze our performance data and continuously adjust the training plan to be optimally prepared at the start.

The Cape Epic is not only a physical but also a logistical challenge. Detailed planning is crucial for success. This includes route analysis, selecting the optimal tactics, and organizing the trip. 

We take care of booking flights and accommodations early. Assembling the necessary documents and papers is also an important point on our to-do list. This ensures that we can fully concentrate on the race.

The Cape Epic does not forgive material errors. Therefore, we place great importance on selecting the right equipment. Our bikes must be robust, reliable, and lightweight. We rely on high-quality components and test them extensively in advance. The choice of tires, brakes, and suspension is also crucial for success. We work closely with our partners to find the perfect setup for the specific conditions of the Cape Epic. In addition to the bike, the right clothing also plays an important role. We focus on breathable materials and an optimal fit to perform at our best even in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

The Cape Epic is a fiercely competitive race. Many teams prepare intensively. What sets us apart from the competition?
