Intensive research lead Ergon’s development team to identify the saddle as the main cause of cycling discomfort for men. Contrary to what many cyclists think, the genitals themselves rarely experience discomfort as they can move to avoid the seated pressure. Rather, it’s high pressure on the extremely sensitive perineal area that can lead to numbness. The SMS Comp Men offers ideal relief for the male perineum. Using endless prototypes and thousands of test kilometers, Ergon has tailored the saddle specifically to the anatomy and needs of male mountain bikers.
Men have a less flexible pelvis than women and a reason why male cyclists generally sit more upright on the saddle, placing more pressure on the sit bones. Because of this, a man's saddle can be narrower in the transition area between the rear of the saddle and the saddle nose (Y-shape), which gives the legs more freedom and space when pedaling.
Compared to the female anatomy, the pubic bones of men are much steeper. The pubic symphysis is also significantly higher. These anatomical differences were taken into particular consideration during the development of the SMS Comp Men, which makes its gender specific relief so effective.
To protect the sensitive perineal area, pressure must be shifted precisely to the sit bones and parts of the pubic arch. The SMS Comp Men achieves this with a flat and even relief surface that is perfectly adapted to the more upright male pelvis and offers the highest possible freedom of movement. The padding cushions and relieves pressure using the highest quality orthopedic foams.
The V-shaped pelvic bones always need a sufficiently large contact surface. The shape and size of the saddle surface must match the rider's sit bone distance so the ergonomic features of the saddle work properly. The two available saddle widths are designed so that the contact surface corresponds to the sit bone distance. The more forward a rider sits, the further forward the sit bones will contact the saddle.
The compact Y-shape of the SMS Comp Men’s saddle provides more legroom and reduces the risk of snagging your shorts on the saddle nose during steep climbs. Annoying leg contact with the saddle is effectively reduced for improved mobility and control of your mountain bike on steep or technical terrain.
The deep, men’s specific relief channel directs pressure away from the sensitive perineal area to the supporting sit bones and reliably prevents pressure, pain and numbness, even on rough terrain and high impacts. You will ride longer and harder in total comfort.
The SMS Comp Men is made of extremely resilient orthopedic foam, which has been ergonomically formed and shaped precisely for mountain bikers. Body weight pressures are distributed effectively across the full contact area for enhanced support. The foam padding is specifically designed for long-distance comfort and protection against impacts and vibrations when the trail gets rougher.
On fast rides, reduced weight improves performance and control. The super-light TiNox SL Rails reduce the total weight of the SMS Comp Men in size S/M to a super-light 245 grams (265 grams for size M/L).
The biomechanical reference line (BMR line) is marked on the SMS Comp Men for your convenience when adjusting the saddle. The BMR line is the point at which the saddle is exactly 75 millimeters wide. Once a rider has found the optimum riding position on the bike, the BMR line becomes an important reference for the precise adjustment of saddle height, fore/aft, saddle angle or tilt. Our fitting boxes also use the BMR line as an important reference point.
The best construction, highest quality material, short supply chain and low waste production with an effective recycling path – these are the advantages of a saddle Made in Europe. Better for you and the environment!
