Intensive research lead Ergon’s development team to identify the saddle as the main cause of cycling discomfort for men. Contrary to what many cyclists think, the genitals themselves rarely experience discomfort as they can move to avoid seated pressure. Rather, it’s high pressure on the extremely sensitive perineal area that can lead to numbness. The SMS Pro Men offers ideal relief for the male perineum. Using MRI and CT analyses, endless prototypes and thousands of test kilometers, Ergon has tailored the saddle specifically to the anatomy and needs of male mountain bikers.
Men have a less flexible pelvis than women and a reason why male cyclists generally sit more upright on the saddle, placing more pressure on the sit bones. Because of this, a man's saddle can be narrower in the transition area between the rear of the saddle and the saddle nose (Y-shape), which gives the legs more freedom and space when pedaling. This means less friction and pressure between saddle and thighs.
Compared to the female anatomy, the pubic bones of men are much steeper. The pubic symphysis is also significantly higher. These anatomical differences were taken into consideration during the development of the SMS Pro Men, which makes its gender specific relief from pressure highly effective.
To protect the sensitive perineal area, pressure must be shifted precisely to the sit bones and parts of the pubic arch. The SMS Pro Men achieves this with a slightly curved and even relief surface that is perfectly adapted to the more upright male pelvis and offers the highest possible freedom of movement. Our new Reactive Performance Foam padding cushions and relieves pressure using the latest foam technology.
The V-shaped pelvic bones need a generous contact surface area to support the sit bones comfortably in different riding positions. The shape and size of the saddle must match the rider's sit bone width for the ergonomic features to function effectively. Ergon offers the SMS Pro Men in two sizes for a better personalized fit and a comfortable ride.
Ergon's new Reactive Performance Foam used in the SMS Pro Men was developed under exacting ergonomic principles for the comfort and performance demands of mountain bikers. It delivers equalized pressure distribution, enhanced energy return, reduction of harsh trail vibration and shock with minimal material fatigue. The precisely tuned foam improves long-distance comfort and effective protection against trail chatter and big impacts when the trail gets rough.
The compact length and Y-shaped ergonomic design of the SMS Pro Men’s saddle provide more legroom and reduces the risk of snagging your shorts on the saddle nose during steep climbs. Annoying leg contact with the saddle is effectively reduced for improved mobility and control of your mountain bike on steep or technical terrain. Additionally, it prevents nerves aside the saddle from receiving too much pressure, which may cause cold or numb feet.
The deep relief channel, specially designed for a men’s anatomy, directs pressure away from the perineum to the supporting sit bones, and reliably prevents pressure, pain and numbness, even on rough terrain with big impacts. The slightly curved seat surface distributes the pressure more evenly in coordination with the enlarged relief channel. This allows you to ride longer with more comfort.
Every gram saved translates into more performance and easier bike control on the trail. The carbon composite saddle shell combined with the TiNox SL rails reduces the total weight of the SMS Pro Men in size S/M to a super-light 225 grams (230 grams for size M/L).
The biomechanical reference line (BMR line) is marked on the SMS Pro Men for convenience when installing or adjusting the saddle position. The BMR line is the point at which the saddle is exactly 75 millimeters wide. Once a rider has found the optimal seating position or during a bike fitting process, the BMR line becomes an important reference for the precise adjustment of saddle height, setback and angle. Our Fitting Box MTB/E-MTB also uses the BMR line as an important reference point.
The best workmanship and materials, shorter supply chain and low-waste production – these are the advantages of a saddle made in Europe.
